Violet has been on edge about Isobel and the Lord Merton ever since he started showing an interest in Isobel.ĭownstairs a setup begins that ties the differences between men and women to a discussion about the changing times. Isobel: Well, I think I should tell him before I tell you.
At the very least she’d like to know what Isobel has decided. Isobel has gone over to chat Violet, who is anxious to know if Isobel has told the Lord Merton, Richard “Dickie” Grey ( Douglas Reith) if she will accept his marriage proposal.
Like, seriously, Robert? You think I need help to plan a party? I don’t blame her! “I’m guest of honor at a dinner for all the Yorkshire based commanding officers, so I can’t get out it.” (I believe that statement is called a humblebrag.) Since it’s taking place a distance away Robert will stay there overnight.Ĭora’s expression through this shows anger and frustration. He wants her help because on the Thursday he has to be away on Thursday night. Rosamund says she’s be staying at Downtown for about a week (no doubt to take care of this “farmer’s child” business.) Lord Grantham is pleased because he’s having “a bash” for his deputy lieutenants that Friday. Being she’s not a fool, Rosamund know’s it’s Edith’s little girl and suggests (demands) Edith come to her room after they’ve changed for dinner. Lady Rosamund takes Lady Edith Crawley ( Laura Carmichael) aside to tell her she’s heard about the farmer’s child Edith has taken an interest in. Talk about the changing times! It’s a great opening, as well as a signal about the kinds of stories we’ll be seeing in episode five. Isobel: I doubt they were aiming it at you. Violet: In Essex? Isn’t it terribly damp? It’s for people who want to take all their clothes off. “What do you mean someone’s opened a colony in Essex?” Lady Mary ( Michelle Dockery), who is sitting on the sofa next to Rose seems both amused and intrigued – which doesn’t surprise me in the least! ( If you know anything about astrology…I’d say Lady Mary is definitely a Scorpio!) However, The Dowager Countess Violet Crawley ( Maggie Smith) – mother of Robert and Rosamund – is confused. Well, that’s a way to stop conversations! Cousin-in-law Isobel Crawley ( Penelope Wilton), and Tom Branson ( Allen Leech), widower of Lady Sybil Crawley, turn to look at her curiously. Rose: I say! Someone has opened a nudist colony at Wigfield and Essex. The youngest woman, Crawley cousin Lady Rose Maclare ( Lily James)is reading the paper and starts off one of the funniest bits I’ve seen on Downton Abbey! She’s greeted by Robert’s wife Cora, Countess of Grantham ( Elizabeth McGovern), and then escorted to the library where the entire Crawley family is gathered for afternoon tea. The opening of the episode is the arrival of Lady Rosamund Painswick ( Samantha Bond), sister to the Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham ( Hugh Bonneville).
Spoiler Warning: Contains Spoilers for Downton Abbey 5×5
Of course, it wouldn’t be Downton Abbey without the drama that these things create! Although the issues of class and the changing world continue to be illustrated, this week’s Downton Abbey recap shows how some things will always remain the same – the bonds of love, family, and friendship. Downtown Abbey 5×5 shifts its focus to the world of love, romance and relationships.
